Eat for England (Wildspace Network)

Eat for England | Bob Budd | Axisweb: Contemporary Art UK Network
`Eat for England’ - A commission for the Wildspace Art Trail, South East Northumberland, UK, located on the edge of arable farm land. Stainless steel, 5.5 metres high. The words `Eat for England’ are engraved on the spoon handle. The title of the work, `Eat for England’, harks back to the second world war food production program entitled `Dig for Victory’, when we were asked, as part of the war effort, to dig up our lawns and produce our own food. But in these times of plenty, we have exchanged the spade for a spoon, leaving out the bit that requires hard physical work, preferring instead that the food simply arrives on a plate. As we agonise (a little) about the source of our food, the artwork might reflect a certain distance we have to the realities of food production, farming, rural and environmental affairs.
