Starston Station

Starston Station building is a few miles west of Harleston. Although the complete passenger service between Tivetshall and Beccles started in 1863 there was a service between Harleston and Tivetshall by 1855. The station was closed in 1866, presumably through of lack of use, yet the grand building still remains and the character is still obvious. The original platform awning has been converted to living accommodation, and further extended round the west side of the building. The fact that the brick work has not been rendered, like Ellingham and Geldeston station buildings, is very pleasing. This shot shows what a magnificent building it still is. Maybe the bishop's hat type windows would have been more in keeping if they had been rounded at the top to match the originals, but it ceased being a station nearly 150 years ago, so what remains is still amazing. The old railway station is south of Starston, near to Grovefield House, seen on this 1946 Ordinance Survey map: - https://www.flickr.com/photos/rtw501/8348643039/
